The active ingredient in Wegovy – Semaglutide – can be found in two other medications: Ozempic and Rybelsus.
Rybelsus, Ozempic and Wegovy are all developed by the same company – Novo Nordisk.
Rybelsus and Ozempic are approved by the US FDA only for the treatment of type 2 diabetes while Wegovy is approved by the US FDA only for chronic weight management in patients who have a BMI of 30 or more and those with a lower BMI of 27 or more, with at least one weight-related medical problem (such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes or high cholesterol).
