Semaglutide, the active ingredient in Wegovy, has been found to cause thyroid C-cell tumours in rodents during animal studies of the medication. It is currently unknown if it has the same effect in humans.
Wegovy should not be taken by people with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer or multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2).
If you have a history of these conditions, or if you experience any symptoms of thyroid cancer such as a lump or swelling in the neck, difficulty swallowing, or hoarseness, you should inform your healthcare provider immediately.
