MPB is the end result of a process initiated by a hormone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which is derived from testosterone. This process causes longer, darker hairs to be replaced by thinner, shorter hairs which do not have a strong attachment to small muscles in the skin.
If diagnosed early, it may be possible to stop or reverse the effect of DHT. However, if left untreated for too long, the condition may become permanent.
